On April 4-6, 2000 the Choose to Save Education Program hosted a Forum on Retirement Security and Personal Savings at the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in Washington, DC.
The Forum brought together key representatives in the private, public and non-profit sectors for sharing of expertise and best practices encouraging long-term, routine saving, planning and investing by individuals.
The two principal topics of the Forum, covered in both plenary and breakout sessions, were: 1) Increasing retirement planning and retirement program sponsorship and participation, and contributions at all income and age levels, and 2) Minimizing the leakage of savings from the retirement system as more defined benefit and defined contribution plans pay lump sum distributions.
Forum participants addressed the importance of creating a national environment that encourages personal savings and investment for retirement, and focused attention on actions and "best practices" that companies and organizations could replicate and take on their own.
